Jorge Barakat Pitti
Lawyer by profession, Mr. Barakat earned a Degree in Law and Political Science, Sigma Lambda Chapter of Honor at the University of Panama; he earned an MA in Negotiation, Mediation and Arbitration and took Specialized Higher Studies (postgraduate education) on the topic “Alternative Methods for Conflict Resolution”, both at the Latin-American University of Science and Technology, where he received the honorary degree “Summa Cum Laude.”
Currently, he is a professor at the Panama International Maritime University (UMIP) and a member of its Board of Directors.
Mr. Barakat is a founder member of the law firm Barakat-Pitti & Associates, which specializes in maritime, commercial and civil law.
He is also a member of the Pan-American Institute of Maritime Law, the Panama Maritime Law Association, the Panama Bar Association and the Association of Maritime Law “Mare Nostrum”.
Mr. Barakat was Court Clerk ad interim, Chief Clerk III and General Notary III at Panama’s Maritime Court, Deputy Administrator of the Panama Maritime Authority, adviser in Legal and Consular Matters in Panama’s Consulate, in Ottawa, Canada. Currently, as Administrator of the Panama Maritime Authority, he strives to maintain Panama’s leadership in registration of vessels. He also encourages and promotes a culture of transparency and openness within the entity, which is under his direction, in order to offer an efficient service in consonance with the requirements and needs of the international maritime market.
